Planning for growth of your OpenStack environment
Presenters: Robert Esker, NetApp
Abstract: Planning your underlying OpenStack infrastructure, whether new or in-place environments, can be a challenging task. What hardware resources do you need? How resilient will the that environment be? How much is it going to cost to Scale?
It is important to plan how your environment will grow from the beginning or at least plan for growth when building out.
In this session, we will discuss how to choose a storage environment that will best fit your needs and provide a growth plan moving forward that minimizes the overhead necessary for the environment and directly impact both servers and storage. We will get into how a centralized storage environment provides both data efficiencies as well as server hardware efficiency. This directly impacts the cost of your OpenStack environment and provides for greater utilization of that hardware as the environment grows.

Implementing an OpenStack Deployment –Trials and tribulations to a scalable service
Presenters: Tony Leger and Brad Flanary, NetApp
Abstract: Like any new technology that is growing fast - we often find ourselves lacking experience to accomplish the means to a goal. Attendees will hear about the path taken to provide a scalable self service environment that could be used to create an infrastructure for Virtualized hosts. We have a broad and storied history in maintaining vast quantities of Virtualized hosts to meet internal customer requirements. But we didn’t have the experience to deploy an OpenStack Ecosystem that could be dependable, repeatable, consistent and scalable as requirements grew. This session will provide attendees with some insight to the successes, bumps and bruises of building an Operational OpenStack deployment to provide a self–service DevOps Private Cloud for a large Engineering team DevOps users. We will share the different design patterns and the decision criteria as we traveled down this path of trial and error.
Recommendations for Secure Cinder Deployments using NFS
Presenters: Greg Loughmiller and Glenn Gobelli, NetApp
Abstract: There are several options available to provide block storage services to tenants through the hypervisor. NFS is a popular method that provides ease of manageability and high scalability for block storage services to tenants. Modern hypervisors are capable of delivering file based storage to virtual machines and presenting it as block device. This provides many benefits, but until recently, the NFS deployment model within Cinder had some challenges from a security standpoint. Now, with the changes made in Juno, there are options available that will allow service providers to offer a more secure NFS Cinder deployment within a cloud context. This session will provide you with conceptual and operational details about deploying NFS and Cinder securely within OpenStack.
Multitenancy with Cinder: How Volume Types Enable It
Presenters: Jeff Applewhite, NetApp
Abstract: This presentation will start with an overview of how the cinder scheduler works. Then we will describe how volume types work in the Juno/Kilo time frame. Before Juno volume types were accessible by all tenants, but new capabilities have been introduced. We will cover how extra specs and storage backends allow volume types that will pin tenant volumes into a Cinder backend. This provides new flexibility to vendors to define and provision their storage pools. We will describe how the concept of a Storage Virtual Machine can enable true multi-tenancy.
Commodity storage platforms in OpenStack
Presenters: Jeff Applewhite, NetApp and Ivan Gonzalez, Metacloud
Abstract: OpenStack users often believe that the platform can magically transform commodity storage in to world class, enterprise-grade storage. The truth is that while OpenStack adds a tremendous amount of flexibility and control in provisioning and user-driven consumption of storage, if you’re looking for a truly robust back end to power your OpenStack deployment, you need more than commodity.
In this talk, Jeff Applewhite from NetApp and Ivan Gonzalez from Metacloud will discuss when commodity storage makes sense, and what options are available for customers that require additional storage performance, resiliency, or integration with other platforms.
Scalable Continuous Integration at NetApp
Presenters: Andrew Kerr and Alex Meade, NetApp and Daniel Curran, Rackspace
Abstract: This presentation will describe the challenges NetApp overcame while implementing an elastic CI system capable of verifying a large number of patches per day from the OpenStack Cinder project. As more 3rd party vendors integrate driver support into OpenStack, scalable solutions to these challenges become critical. We will also describe how we leveraged the same infrastructure used for our 3rd party testing to improve our internal Agile development process and streamline submissions into the various OpenStack projects, while maintaining high code quality.
Automate all the Things
Presenters: Bob Callaway, NetApp
Abstract: As you build out an OpenStack Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) environment, automation becomes a key factor in deployment. Once the infrastructure is up and running you can deploying individual, virtual environment with ease. But what about deploying new underlying hardware infrastructure for your OpenStack cloud?
In this session, we will explain how NetApp is working with automation software partners such as puppet and Chef to help solve your automation of storage deployment underlying OpenStack.
